Supplements of Tilapia Fish and Iron (Fe) towards Changes in Interleukin-6 Levels in Children Patients with Tuberculosis
Pulmonary tuberculosis is a direct infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis that attacks lung tissue and other organs. Child patients with tuberculosis often experience an increase in IL-6 production so that a decrease in body mass index is associated with high levels of TNF and IL-6. This conditionscan cause a chronic lack of energy, protein reserves, anorexia, and fever which results in drastic weight loss. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the effect of tilapia fish suplements and Fe on changes in Interleukin-6 (IL-6). This research was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-posttest with control group design. The sampling technique used randomized sampling with a sample of 40 respondents divided into 4 groups. Before and after the intervention, pediatric tuberculosis patients in the treatment and control groups were examined for IL-6 levels using the ELISA method. Data retrieval of energy and protein intake consumed by using a food recall 3x24 hours which is then analyzed using a nutritional survey. The data obtained were tested for normality using the Saphiro-Wilk test and to test the homogeneity of interleukin-6 levels between the treatment group and the control group, the One Way Anova test was used. The results of this study indicated that there was a decrease in IL-6 levels in each treatment compared to the control after being controlled by variables of pre IL-6 levels, energy intake and protein intake. By giving tilapia fish supplements 500 mg 2x1 capsules and Fe syrup 1x1 measuring spoons for 21 days gave the highest effect compared to single administration of 750 mg tilapia fish supplements and single administration of Fe syrup although the effect was still very small, which was only 0.09%. So, by giving tilapia fish supplements and Fe syrup which contains high protein and albumin as well as vitamins and minerals, it can help increase nutrient intake which has an impact on increasing body immunity, then it will reduce IL-6 levels which are inflammatory mediators.
